Strategic purpose
statement
This purpose of this qualification is to provide the solid wood manufacturing
industry with people who have the advanced technical skills and knowledge
required to operate as trade-level finger jointer operators.
Graduates will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of finger
jointing plant and equipment, without supervision. Graduates will also be
responsible for the maintenance of plant and equipment and will be capable
of troubleshooting and making decisions to maintain productivity.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

Grind and maintain a finger jointing cutterhead.

Apply knowledge of calculations and the technical aspects of tooling and
machinery relevant to operating a finger jointing machine.

Inspect and maintain a finger jointing machine.

Set up an edge-to-edge or face-to-face finger jointing machine.

Coordinate in-feed, out-feed, production volume and shook quality for a
finger jointing operation.

Diagnose product and joint defects and implement corrective actions to
meet production and quality requirements of a finger jointing operation.
This qualification builds on the Finger Jointing Strand of the New Zealand
Certificate in Solid Wood Manufacturing (Level 3) with strands in Finger
Jointing; Pole, Post and Pile; Saw Doctoring; Sawmilling; Timber Drying;
Timber Grading and Optimising; Timber Machining; and Timber Treatment
[Ref: 1969].
This qualification can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Wood
Manufacturing (Advanced Processing) (Level 5) [Ref: 2314].
Employment

Holders of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge to work in
advanced finger jointing operational roles in solid wood manufacturing.

Qualification award
This qualification can be awarded by an organisation which has an approved
programme of study, or industry training programme, leading to the
qualification.
The certificate will display the logos of the NZQF and Competenz, and may
display the name and/or logo of the awarding body.
Evidence
requirements for
managing
consistency
All TEOs either arranging training or delivering programmes that lead to the
award of the qualification are required to participate in a consistency process
scheduled by NZQA.
This will involve reviewing evidence associated with graduate’s achievement
of outcomes, and agreeing acceptable thresholds for qualification outcome
achievement and areas for improvement.
To demonstrate how graduates are achieving the qualification graduate
profile outcomes, TEOs are required to produce their own evidence in a high
level report.
Evidence will include the following:

Employer surveys to determine if graduates of the qualification meet
the graduate profile outcomes.

Evidence of effective processes to ensure programmes continue to
meet current industry needs.

A range of workplace evidence demonstrating that graduates meet
the graduate profile outcomes.

Any other relevant evidence as appropriate.

Credit transfer and
recognition of prior
learning
arrangements
Organisations seeking approval to award the qualification are expected to
have Recognition of Current Competence (RCC) or Recognition of Prior
Learning (RPL) assessment processes in place. Credit transfer will be
automatic where assessment standards are used for assessment within
programmes of study or training leading to this qualification.

Replacement
information
This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Finger Jointing (Level 4)
[Ref: 1311].
People currently working towards the replaced qualification may either complete the requirements for
that qualification by 31 December 2018 or transfer their results to this replacement New Zealand
qualification.
New enrolments into programmes leading to the expiring qualification will not be accepted after 31
December 2015.
It is anticipated that no existing candidates will be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements.
However, anyone who feels that they have been disadvantaged may appeal to Competenz at the
address below. Appeals will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
