Strategic purpose
statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the solid wood manufacturing
industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required to work as
advanced operators in a solid wood manufacturing operation.
Graduates will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of plant and
equipment used in solid wood manufacturing without supervision. Graduates
will also be responsible for the maintenance of plant and equipment and will
be capable of troubleshooting and making decisions to maintain productivity.
Graduate
profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

Lead an investigation into production issues or understand cost factors in
a solid wood manufacturing operation.
Outcome Statement
Graduates of the Laminating Strand will also be able to:

Apply knowledge of adhesives and gluing procedures used in wood
lamination processes in solid wood manufacturing.

Apply skills and knowledge to carry out technical tasks used in lamination
of wood products.
Graduates of the Timber Drying Strand will also be able to:

Manage the operation, performance and maintenance requirements of a
timber kiln operation.

Understand production planning and production control processes in a
wood manufacturing operation.
Graduates of the Timber Grading Strand will also be able to:

Grade timber to company grading specifications at production rate and
agreed industry standards, and understand value and cost factors in solid
wood manufacturing.

Manage the quality requirements of a timber grading operation.

Education
pathway
This qualification can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Wood
Manufacturing (Advanced Processing) (Level 5) [Ref: 2314].
Employment
pathway
Holders of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge to work in
advanced finger jointing, laminating, sawmilling, timber drying, timber grading,
and timber treatment roles in a solid wood manufacturing environment.
Qualification Specification
Qualification award
This qualification can be awarded by an organisation which has an approved
programme of study, or industry training programme, leading to the
qualification.
The certificate will display the logos of the NZQF and Competenz, and may
display the name and/or logo of the awarding body.
Evidence
requirements for
managing
consistency
All TEOs either arranging training or delivering programmes that lead to the
award of the qualification are required to participate in a consistency process
scheduled by NZQA.
This will involve reviewing evidence associated with graduate’s achievement
of outcomes, and agreeing acceptable thresholds for qualification outcome
achievement and areas for improvement.
To demonstrate how graduates are achieving the qualification graduate
profile outcomes, TEOs are required to produce their own evidence in a high
level report.
Evidence will include the following:

Employer surveys to determine if graduates of the qualification meet
the graduate profile outcomes.

Evidence of effective processes to ensure programmes continue to
meet current industry needs.

A range of workplace evidence demonstrating that graduates meet
the graduate profile outcomes.
 Any other relevant evidence as appropriate.

Credit transfer and
recognition of prior
learning
arrangements
Organisations seeking approval to award the qualification are expected to
have Recognition of Current Competence (RCC) or Recognition of Prior
Learning (RPL) assessment processes in place. Credit transfer will be
automatic where assessment standards are used for assessment within
programmes of study or training leading to this qualification.

Transition information
Replacement
information
This qualification, the New Zealand Certificate in Saw Doctoring (Level 4)
[Ref: 2313], and the New Zealand Certificate in Sawmilling (Level 4)
[Ref: 2409] replaced the National Certificate in Solid Wood Manufacturing
(Advanced) with strands in Saw Doctoring, Sawmilling, Timber Drying,
Timber Grading, and Timber Treatment [Ref: 1307].
People currently working towards the replaced qualifications may either complete the requirements for
those qualifications by 31 December 2018 or transfer their results to this replacement New Zealand
qualification.
New enrolments into programmes leading to the expiring qualifications will not be accepted after
31 December 2015.
Ref: 1307 contains expiring unit standards for which a replacement unit standard has now been
registered. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the replacement
unit standard are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the expiring unit standards (reverse
transition).
