Those credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of spray guns; use a spray gun; maintain a spray gun; and rectify spray gun defects. Outcome 2 Use a spray gun. Range may include but are not limited to – gravity, suction, pressure, high volume low pressure, low volume low pressure. Evidence requirements 2.1 Spray gun is identified and set up according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Range 2.2 Material to be sprayed is identified, and used according to paint manufacturer's specifications. Range 2.3 air pressure, fluid adjustment, fan adjustment, set up. single pack paints, two pack paints; paint viscosity, measuring stick, paint container. Spray gun is used according to the spray gun manufacturer's specifications and the industry acceptable standard, and there are no defects on the painted panel. Range gun distance, arc, angle, speed, overlap; dryspray, runs, banding, uneven coating, heavy orange peel, solvent popping, oil, moisture, overloading. 2.4 Spray gun is cleaned according to manufacturer's specifications, and is put away in its place and is not damaged. 2.5 Tools, materials, and equipment are clean and put away in their places, and the work area is clean. 2.6 Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task. Evidence requirements 3.1 Tools and materials are selected that will enable the gun to be maintained according to the spray gun manufacturer's specifications. Range 3.2 brushes, solvents compatible with the paint being used, cloths, compressed air supply, lubricants, and/or spray gun cleaning machine. Spray gun is maintained and operated according to spray gun manufacturer's specifications. Range cleaned, lubricated. 3.3 Tools, materials, and equipment are clean and put away in their places, and the work area is clean. 3.4 Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task. Range personal safety; safety of other people; vehicle safety; workshop safety; environmental safety; tool, equipment, and machine safety. Outcome 4 Rectify spray gun defects. Evidence requirements 4.1 Tools and materials that will enable the gun to be repaired are selected and used according to the spray gun manufacturer's specifications. Range 4.2 Spray gun faults are identified, and the gun is repaired and operates according to manufacturer's specifications. Range 4.3 water and/or solvents compatible with the paint being used, cloths, compressed air supply, lubricants; gun spanners, brushes. air leakage, fluid leakage, defective spray pattern, no paint coming out of fluid tip, no air coming out of air cap, fluttery spray, worn fluid needle and tip, set up. Tools, materials, and equipment are clean and put away in their places, and the work area is clean. Work is completed to the acceptable industry standard and in an acceptable industry time.
