People credited with this unit standard are able to: control iron making process parameters; manage plant malfunction and breakdown; and optimise melter integrity.

Explanatory notes

1 Definition

Company documentation refers to the documented proc edures, manufacturer’s manuals and selected reference texts for the equipment and process.

2 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Health and

Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991.

3 This unit standard must be assessed in a workplace environment.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Control iron making process parameters.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Multiple process streams are controlled concurrently in accordance with company documentation.

Range multiple process streams include but are not limited to

– start, process, hold, shut down.

1.2 Output data is monitored and interpreted to enable adjustment to control parameters to maintain technical process specifications.

1.3 Output product meets company specifications for chemistry and temperature.

The decisions regarding product which is outside specification are made in accordance with company documentation.

Outcome 2

Manage plant malfunction and breakdown.

Evidence requirements

2.1 The decisions made enable any plant faults to be remedied with minimum disruption to melter continuity.

2.2 The prioritisation of any remedial actions enables minimum disruption to melter continuity.

2.3 The organisation of any remedial action enables plant utilisation requirements to be achieved.

Range remedial action includes but is not limited to – clean, replace, repair.

Outcome 3

Optimise melter integrity.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Melter conditions are monitored to ensure melter integrity is maintained and any necessary remedial action is taken in accordance with company documentation.

Range melter conditions include but are not limited to – wall condition, bath levels.

3.2 Associated equipment is monitored to enable the preservation of melter integrity.

Range associated equipment includes but is not limited to

– cooling and feed systems.

3.3 Downstream conditions are monitored to enable the adjustment of control parameters to reduce melter damage.
