Explanatory notes
1
All work must be carried out in accordance with the quality management system,
documented protocol system or Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) acceptable in
a commercial or research laboratory.

Health and Safety practices must conform to Australian/New Zealand Standard
AS/NZS 2243:2006 Set – Safety in Laboratories Parts 1, 2, 3, 7 and 10 available at
http://www.standards.co.nz and http://infostore.saiglobal.com/store.

This standard may be assessed using simulated conditions.

Legislation applicable to this unit standard includes:
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992;
Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996.

Glossary
Laboratory procedures refer to documented systems or processes of operation which
may be found in a SOP manual, quality management system, or in protocol system
documentation. These procedures are external and/or internal laboratory
requirements governing laboratory work.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of microbiological hazards.
Range
microbiological hazards include – cultures, spills, aerosols, disposal,
contamination from handling;
evidence of one example for each hazard is required.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Microbiological hazards are identified in accordance with laboratory procedures.
1.2
Examples of hazards are described in terms of consequences and how they are
managed in accordance with laboratory procedures.
Outcome 2
Follow microbiological laboratory procedures for health and safety practices.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Safe working practices are demonstrated in accordance with laboratory
procedures.

2.2
safe handling techniques, storage, clean-up, disposal.
Incidents and accidents relating to health and safety are managed, reported,
and documented in accordance with laboratory procedures.

before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses

Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
