Purpose
This unit standard is for people working in horticulture. People credited with
this unit standard are able to calculate the fertiliser requirements for a
selected horticulture area, prepare and apply fertiliser to a selected
horticulture area, and maintain fertiliser equipment.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Calculate the fertiliser requirements for a selected horticulture area.
Performance criteria
1.1
Area to be fertilised is measured and the area calculated in accordance with
workplace procedures.
1.2
The amount of fertiliser for the selected area is calculated in accordance with a
predetermined fertiliser programme.
Element 2
Prepare and apply fertiliser to a selected horticulture area.
Performance criteria
2.1
Fertiliser applicator is selected and calibrated to obtain uniform coverage at the
calculated rate.
Range
pedestrian spreaders, tractor-mounted spreaders, boom sprayers,
fertigation.
2.2
Damage, wear or malfunctions of the fertiliser applicator are identified and
reported to the work supervisor in accordance with workplace procedures.
2.3
Specified fertiliser is loaded in accordance with workplace procedures and the
Code of Practice for Manual Handling.
2.4
Weather conditions are assessed prior to application in terms of temperature,
sunlight, rainfall, and irrigation.
2.5
Soil moisture status and area conditions are assessed in terms of suitability for
fertiliser application.

Performance criteria
3.1
Implement is emptied and thoroughly washed down in accordance with
workplace procedures.
3.2
Moving parts are lubricated where necessary in accordance with the operator’s
manual.
3.3
Implements are stored in accordance with workplace procedures.

Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body
with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from
assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before
they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
