Purpose This unit standard is for people who work, or intend to work, in the plumbing or water industries.

People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare to test water supply backflow prevention devices; inspect and test water supply backflow prevention devices; report results of water supply backflow prevention device testing; and work safely and with care.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Prepare to test water supply backflow prevention devices.

Performance criteria

1.1 Site location is identified in accordance with on-site requirements.

1.2 Site access is identified in accordance with Water Supplies Protection

Regulations 1961, local authority by-laws, and legislative requirements.

1.3 Legal responsibilities relating to accessing water supply are identified, and obligations are met prior to testing.

1.4 Documentation for access is completed in accordance with the building compliance schedule, and on-site, legislative, and local authority requirements.

1.5 Testing equipment is checked to ensure it has a current test certificate, and is calibrated in accordance with AS/NZS 2845.1:1998.

1.6 Testing equipment is prepared in accordance with test requirements.

Range includes but is not limited to – test kit, test nipples, spanners and screwdrivers, safety equipment.

Element 2

Inspect and test water supply backflow prevention devices.

Performance criteria

2.1 Backflow prevention devices are inspected to determine integrity in accordance with the Building Act 2004 compliance schedule for backflow prevention,

AS/NZS 2845.1:1998, Water Supplies Protection Regulations 1961, Backflow

Prevention for Drinking Water Suppliers Code of Practice, and manufacturers’ instructions.

Range atmospheric vacuum break (AVB), barometric loop, wafer check, registered air gap, double detector check, hose connection vacuum breaker, single detector check valve.

2.2 Backflow prevention devices are tested to determine integrity in accordance with the Building Act 2004 compliance schedule for backflow prevention,

AS/NZS 2845.1:1998, Water Supplies Protection Regulations 1961, Backflow

Prevention for Drinking Water Suppliers Code of Practice, and manufacturers’ instructions.

Range pressure vacuum breaker (PVB), spill proof vacuum breaker

(SPVB), double check valve, reduced pressure zone device.

2.3 Faults are identified in terms of causes and possible alternatives for rectification.

Faults are rectified in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions.

Report results of water supply backflow prevention device testing.

Performance criteria

3.1 Reports are completed in accordance with Backflow Prevention for Drinking

Water Suppliers Code of Practice.

3.2 Reports are submitted in accordance with Backflow Prevention for Drinking

Water Suppliers Code of Practice, Building Act 2004 compliance schedule, and local authority by-laws.

3.3 Reports are filed in accordance with Backflow Prevention for Drinking Water

Suppliers Code of Practice.

Work safely and with care.

Performance criteria

4.1 Practical activities are carried out avoiding harm to people and damage to property, other services, materials, tools, and equipment.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
