NZQA registered unit standard 12366 version 4 Page 1 of 3 Title Describe viral impact on host cells Level 5 Credits 5 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to describe: a virus; the lytic bacteriophage and the lysogenic bacteriophage; and the impact of a plant and an animal virus on their hosts. Classification Science > Microbiology Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes None. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Describe a virus. Evidence requirements 1.1 A virus is described in terms of its structure. Range 1.2 structure includes – shape, size, envelope, nucleic acid content. A named enveloped virus is described and typed in terms of its structure, host range, target tissue, and the resulting disease it causes. Outcome 2 Describe the lytic bacteriophage and the lysogenic bacteriophage. Evidence requirements 2.1 The lysogenic and lytic bacteriophages are described in terms of the differences and similarities in the viral life cycles. Range 2.2 includes but is not limited to – temperate bacteriophage. The viral life cycles are described in terms of the differences and similarities of their effect on bacterial cells. Evidence requirements 3.1 The cytopathic effects of the selected virus are described in terms of the host cell’s structure and biochemistry. 3.2 Specific host/virus interactions are described in terms of their impact on the host. interactions include but are not limited to – lytic, latent, persistent, transforming infections; evidence of three interactions is required. Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR).
