People credited with this unit standard are able to describe: the
interventions that can be used to control and manage MSD
risk; and the principles behind monitoring MSD risk and
managing MSD cases in the meat processing industry.
This unit standard is for people who are employed as
supervisors in the meat processing industry and who are
required to manage people in a production line environment.

MSD refers to musculoskeletal disorders.

Outcome 1
Describe the interventions that can be used to control and manage MSD risk.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Interventions that can be used to control and manage musculoskeletal disorder
risk are described in terms of the recommendations detailed in Industry
Interventions for Addressing Musculoskeletal Disorders (Strains/Sprains) in
New Zealand Meat Processing.
Range
1.2
includes but is not limited to – rest breaks, stretching, work pace,
task rotation, shift design, work flow management, physical
design, training.
Barriers to interventions are described in terms of those listed in Industry
Interventions for Addressing Musculoskeletal Disorders (Strains/Sprains) in
New Zealand Meat Processing.

includes but is not limited to – financial costs, levels of MSD
awareness, resistance to change, training levels, workplace
culture, job grades.
Outcome 2
Describe the principles behind monitoring MSD risk and managing MSD cases.

treatment, return to work management, alternative duties options,
and vocational reassignment.
