This unit standard is intended primarily for use in the training of
personnel in the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning
(HVAC) industry and covers installation of stainless steel pipework for HVAC systems.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare to
install stainless steel pipe-work; install stainless steel pipework; and test stainless steel pipe-work.

It is assumed that candidates are certified for the particular type of stainless steel
pipe welding performed under evidence requirement 2.2.

Definitions
Industry practice refers to safe and sound practices generally accepted by competent
trade persons within the HVAC industry.
Specifications include technical standards, documented operating and maintenance
procedures or instructions for the system, installation drawings, manufacturers’ data,
installation instructions, installation programme schedules, material schedules, and
site instructions.

Range

All evidence must comply with the relevant provisions of the Health and Safety
in Employment Act 1992.

Evidence may be gathered by the candidate over several work sites and may
need to be spread between several time periods. There typically will be jobs
where part of the job is completed in conjunction with other HVAC personnel.
The evidence relates to the candidates own specific work, not work jointly
performed with other team members, except where the other team member is
checking or assessing the candidate.

Evidence of one or more jobs with a minimum combined total pipe length of 100
linear meters is required.

This unit standard is one of six designed to cover installation of HVAC systems,
HVAC control systems, pipe-work, ducting, and insulation, the others being Unit 3239
Install duct-work for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems; Unit 3244,
Install control components for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems; Unit
26327, Install pipe-work and ducting for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning
systems under supervision; Unit 26333, Install external insulation to pipe-work and
ducting for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems; and Unit 26334, Install
pipe-work for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Prepare to install stainless steel pipe-work.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Materials on site are verified against specifications.
1.2
Setting-out of job is in accordance with specifications and industry practice.
Outcome 2
Install stainless steel pipe-work for HVAC systems.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Hangers are installed to structural and seismic standards in accordance with
specifications and industry practice.
2.2
Stainless steel pipes are cut, bent, fabricated, and joined in accordance with
specifications and industry practice, including purging.
2.3
Hangers and stainless steel pipes are installed and spaced in accordance with
specifications and industry practice.
2.4
Installation is completed without unplanned cost or waste.
2.5
Installation is completed so that all control instructions and identifications can be
read.
2.6
Installation is completed within the time frame specified.
Outcome 3
Test stainless steel pipe-work.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Tests confirm that pipe-work meets operational requirements in accordance
with specifications.
