Purpose
This unit standard is for people who are currently working in the food
processing industry. They are expected to have an underpinning knowledge
of computer systems.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: use safe work practices
and procedures while palletising packaged food and related products
process; describe a computer-controlled system as it applies to the operation
of robotic palletisers for packaged food; and prepare to, and palletise
packaged food and related products using robotic computer-controlled
equipment.

Definitions
Organisational procedures refer to documents that include: worksite rules, codes,
and practices; equipment operating instructions; production specifications;
documented quality management systems; and health and safety requirements.
PPE refers to personal protective equipment and may include but is not limited to:
protective clothing, gloves, safety glasses/headwear/footwear, hearing protection,
safety devices.
Equipment includes but is not limited to – automated robotic palletising;
programmable logic controlled (PLC), computer-controlled, and optical equipment;
flat belts, rollers, micro switches, magazines, safety guards, motors.
Services include but are not limited to – compressed air, power.

Element 1
Use safe work practices and procedures while palletising packaged food and related
products.
Performance criteria
1.1
PPE is used in accordance with organisational procedures.
1.2
Work environment is clean and free from hazards in accordance with
organisational procedures.
Range
1.3

Documentation is completed in accordance with organisational procedures.
Element 2
Describe a computer-controlled system as it applies to the operation of robotic palletisers
for packaged food.
Performance criteria
2.1
The description explains how the computer controls the operation of the robot’s
component movements.
Range
includes but is not limited to – pallet infeed, trolley, empty pallet
pickup, infeed and outfeed to robot.

2.2
The description explains the computer-controlled components’ function and
purpose.
Range
may include – sensor, processor, control system, operator
interface;
evidence is required for a minimum of three components.
2.3
The control screens are described in terms of their links and functions.
2.4
The description includes an explanation of start-up, change over
(reprogramming) and shut down procedures.
2.5
The description includes an explanation of the built in safety features of the
robotic controls.
Element 3
Prepare to palletise packaged food and related products using robotic computer-controlled

Performance criteria
3.1
Automated robotic palletising equipment is available, operational and prepared
for product in accordance with organisational procedures
3.2
Production schedule is programmed in accordance with organisational
procedures.
3.3
Pallets are prepared in accordance with organisational procedures.

Robotic palletising equipment is operated in accordance with organisational
procedures.
Range
includes but is not limited to – downtime, operator safety.

4.3
Non-conforming packaged product is identified, and opportunities to rework
product are maximised in accordance with organisational procedures.
4.4
Variations in specified technical performance of robotic palletising equipment
are identified, and corrective action is taken in accordance with organisational
procedures.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
