This unit standard is for experienced people in the glass processing industry.

People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare to manufacture IGUs, and manufacture IGUs.

Explanatory notes

1 Definition

Worksite requirements – refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace.

These requirements include

– company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer’s specifications, product quality specifications, legislative requirements.

2 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes – Health and Safety in Employment

Act 1992.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Prepare to manufacture IGUs.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Preparation of work area and personal safety precautions are carried out in accordance with worksite requirements.

Range preparation includes

– selection and use of protective clothing and safety equipment, identification of hazards, selection of equipment and completion of maintenance checks, checking materials for shelf life and compliance with storage requirements, review of operational procedures, quality control checks, clearing work area.

1.2 Glass used to manufacture IGUs is checked in accordance with worksite requirements.

Page 2 of 3 checks include – glass and processing match with requirements of work or customer order (to include type and thickness, make-up, orientation, shapes, size), quality of glass (to include freedom from seeds, surface damage, edge chips), glass size is within processing equipment limitations, glass clear of dirt and moisture, free of sharp edges.

Outcome 2

Manufacture IGUs.

Evidence requirements

Paperwork is checked to confirm specification of IGUs to be processed. 2.1

2.2 Spacers are selected, cut, or bent and frame is completed in accordance with worksite requirements.

2.3 Dessicant fill is completed in accordance with worksite requirements.

Range fill process includes

– inserting corner keys, completing dessicant fill.

Primary seal is applied in accordance with worksite requirements.

Glass is prepared for assembly in accordance with worksite requirements.

Range preparation includes – final washing and drying, final checking for faults, orientation for frame placement.

2.6 IGU unit is assembled in accordance with worksite requirements.

Range assembly tasks include

– application of prepared frame to first piece of glass, application of second piece of glass, pressing of unit after assembly.

2.7 Where gas fill is required, it is completed in accordance with worksite requirements.

2.8 Where a secondary seal is required, it is applied, and labelling is completed in accordance with worksite requirements.

2.9 Final inspection and/or testing is carried out to ensure completed product meets legislative and worksite requirements.
