People credited with this unit standard are able to: clean and
prepare substrates for structural silicone glazing; install glass
and apply sealant; and complete structural silicone glazing.

Explanatory notes
1
Definition
Worksite requirements – refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which
are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace.
These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and
procedures, work instructions, manufacturer’s specifications, product quality
specifications, legislative requirements.

Employment Act 1992, Building Act 2004, New Zealand Standard (NZS) 4223.3:1999
Code of practice for glazing in buildings – Human impact safety requirements,

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Clean and prepare substrates for structural silicone glazing.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Materials and equipment are checked against job specifications in accordance
with worksite requirements.
1.2
Any oil, grease and soluble salts are removed from substrates using agents
compatible with substrate finish in accordance with worksite requirements.
1.3
Any traces of cleaning agents are removed from substrate surfaces in
accordance with worksite requirements.

1.4
Surfaces are protected from contamination after cleaning and prior to
application of sealant in accordance with worksite requirements.
1.5
Substrates are primed, where required, in accordance with worksite
requirements.
Range
includes but is not limited to – primer is applied only to those areas
which can be sealed within the same working day to avoid
contamination after priming and prior to sealant application.
1.6
Sealant suitable for the application is selected in accordance with worksite
requirements.
1.7
Preparation is completed without injury to personnel or damage to products and
equipment in accordance with job specifications and worksite requirements.
Outcome 2
Install glass and apply sealant.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Glass is securely fixed to minimise movement and checked for re-contamination
prior to sealant application in accordance with worksite requirements.
2.2
Primed surfaces are touch dry, masking tape is applied and all voids, gaps or
joints are sealed in accordance with worksite requirements.
2.3
Sealant is tooled into voids, gaps or joints in accordance with worksite
requirements.
2.4
Masking tape and any spills are removed without damage to, or contamination
of, surfaces in accordance with worksite requirements.
2.5
Sealant is fully cured prior to movement of the frame or panel in accordance
with worksite requirements.
2.6
Glass is installed without injury to personnel or damage to products and
equipment in accordance with job specifications and worksite requirements.
Outcome 3
Complete structural silicone glazing.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Glazed frames or panels are weatherproofed, cleaned, and made free from
residue in accordance with worksite requirements.
3.2
Operations are completed without injury to personnel or damage to products
and equipment in accordance with job specifications and worksite requirements.

3.3
Structural silicone glazing is tested for adhesion failure in accordance with
worksite requirements.
3.4
Customer is advised of any relevant maintenance requirements in accordance
with worksite requirements.
