Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Prepare to operate a hand held post hole borer.

Performance criteria

1.1 Post hole borer is checked for suitability for the job, and maintained prior to use in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

Range throttle cable and its operation, linkages, kill switch, auger pins.

1.2 Auger size is selected to match post size and depth.

Site is checked for obstructions, and obstructions are removed, or work plan adjusted accordingly.

Operate a hand held post hole borer.

Performance criteria

2.1 Post hole borer is anchored and started in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

2.2 Operator is positioned while post hole borer is in operation to ensure work is carried out in a manner which does not cause risk of injury to operator or other people.

Operator maintains full control of post hole borer at all times.

Hole is bored to match post size and required depth, and is in line with guide wires.

Borer is retracted at idle and switched off in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

2.6 Post hole borer is transported without risk of damage to equipment and risk of injury to self or other people.
