NZQA registered unit standard 19118 version 3 Page 1 of 3 Title Describe ruminant digestion, and feed ruminants to meet production targets Level 5 Credits 8 Purpose This unit standard is for people working in a ruminant production system context and recognises the knowledge and skills required to describe the way in which ruminants metabolise food constituents; and demonstrate understanding of feeding ruminants to meet production targets. Classification Agriculture > Farming Skills Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Production target – the quantified output for a farm for a defined period. May include but not limited to production units for – weight gain, condition score gain, milk production, meat production, wool production or velvet production. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Describe the way in which ruminants metabolise food constituents. Range evidence is required for one class of ruminant. Evidence requirements 1.1 Explains digestion in terms of energy and protein metabolism. 1.2 Explains digestion in terms of the breakdown of gross energy to metabolisable energy. 1.3 Describes livestock requirements for protein, energy, minerals and vitamins. Outcome 2 Demonstrate understanding of feeding ruminants to meet production targets. Range evidence is required for at least one production target for one species of ruminant. Range 2.2 must include pasture and a supplementary feed. must include mega joules metabolisable energy (MJ ME). Calculates the cost of the formulated ration. Range 2.3 must include cents/MJ ME. Describes feeding systems and strategies for feeding selected rations. Range frequency of feeding, introduction of feeds, changing feed types.
