Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe a
seasonal feed budget for different classes of livestock for a
period of three months; and describe the selection of a fodder
crop and management of pasture surplus or deficit; and
perform calculations.

Assessment
For the purposes of assessment against element 2, the use of nitrogen and/or
expiring
supplements is not required.

Fodder crop refers to a crop that is harvested as a supplement for either storage or
direct feeding to stock.

Outcome 1
Describe a seasonal feed budget for different classes of livestock for a period of three
months.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Feed budget is described in terms of feed required to achieve animal production
targets for the given period.

terms of likely solutions.

Feed surplus is described in terms of strategies for management to achieve
current and future animal production targets.

Describe the selection of a fodder crop and management of pasture surplus or deficit.
Evidence requirements
2.1
A fodder crop or feed supplement is selected which meets animal and farm
requirements.
Range
2.2

The management of pasture surplus and deficit are described in terms of feed
allocation to meet animal and pasture targets.
Range
management of surplus includes but is not limited to –
conservation of supplements, deferred grazing, increase stocking
rate;
management of deficit includes but is not limited to – feeding
supplements, applying nitrogen; decreasing stocking rate: cull,
graze off-farm.
