Purpose
The National Diploma in Employment Support (Level 6) [Ref: 1040] is a qualification for
people who provide, or wish to enter, employment support services. People awarded this
qualification will have demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and values required for the
provision of employment support services.
People awarded this qualification are able to provide employment support with a diverse
range of people, who may include those who are disabled, mental health
consumers/tangata whai ora, and others who are significantly disadvantaged in the labour
market for a variety of reasons.
Their work is informed by knowledge of what it may mean for disabled people to live in a
disabling society, and supported employment as a philosophy and method of employment
support. They are able to facilitate career planning; explain and apply marketing and job
development; and provide workplace orientation and training, and ongoing employment
support. They can explain how to provide employment support and access services for
diverse service user groups; and develop and enhance quality in employment support.
They work within the framework of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, ethics, and relevant legislation, and
are able to demonstrate an integrated practice theory for employment support. They work
with a considerable degree of autonomy under professional supervision.
The elective section of the qualification enables people to choose one of five extensions to
the compulsory competencies. They can choose to analyse leadership, management, and
managing change in employment support; support Māori service users to access
employment support services; support mental health consumers/tangata whai ora to
access employment support services; support a disabled student through the transition
process from school to work; or support Pacific Islands service users to access
employment support services.
Whilst this qualification does not lead on to any other national qualification, this
qualification may be a pathway to other human services and social services qualifications.
