Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: monitor the
implementation of a quality system; respond to hazardous
situations; contribute to continuous improvement of a quality
system; and demonstrate knowledge of quality system
implementation relating to a whole work area.

Explanatory notes
1
Work must be carried out in accordance with organisational requirements, licensing
requirements, legislative requirements, and industrial awards and agreements.

Responsibility for monitoring quality relates to a whole work area or system.

Quality standards are typically described in specifications such as raw materials,
packaging and final product specifications and work procedures.

Control points refer to those key points in a work process which must be monitored
and controlled. This includes food safety (critical), quality and regulatory control
points as well as inspection points.

Non-conformance refers to any occurrence which prevents work outcomes being
achieved within specification.

Involvement in managing the work quality system includes participation in structured
improvement programs and day-to-day problem solving.

Organisational requirements refers to instructions to staff on policy and procedures
which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace.
These requirements include but are not limited to – site specific requirements,
company quality management requirements, supplier supplied material safety data
sheets, codes of practice, and manufacturer’s specifications.

Quality management requirements includes but is not limited to compliance with the
ISO 9000: 2000 series standards.

Evidence requirements
1.1
Quality requirements and procedures are communicated according to
organisational requirements.
1.2
Procedures to support quality requirements are monitored in terms of their
implementation.
1.3
Mentoring and coaching support is provided to support individuals and groups to
implement the quality system.

Respond to hazardous situations.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Actual and potential non-conformance is identified according to organisational
requirements.
2.2
Procedures for dealing with non-conformance are implemented in terms of
product recall procedures.
2.3
Causes of non-conformance are identified according to organisational
requirements.
2.4
Control measures are implemented to prevent recurrence.
Outcome 3
Contribute to continuous improvement of a quality system.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Work practices and procedures are reviewed to identify possible factors which
contribute to the likelihood of non-conformance.
3.2
Options for removing or controlling the risk of non-conformance are identified
according to organisational requirements.
3.3
Existing control methods are assessed in terms of their adequacy.
3.4
Opportunities to continuously improve quality performance are identified to meet
organisational requirements.

Procedures for implementing improvements are followed according to
organisational requirements.

Demonstrate knowledge of quality system implementation relating to a whole work area.

4.1
Quality and food safety systems in the workplace are analysed in terms of their
response to quality management requirements.
4.2
Factors that affect quality and the application of risk assessment and
management procedures are identified.
4.3
Control procedures and options to prevent non-conformance are identified in
terms of their application.
4.4
Problem solving techniques and technical and process knowledge relevant to
work area or system is identified.
4.5
The procedures for developing or modifying operating procedures are identified
in terms of communication channels and workplace consultative arrangements.

which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
