Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: review the
design and installation plan for a local area computer network
(LAN); install LAN devices; install LAN system and application
software; test the installation of a LAN; and gain user
acceptance for the installation of a LAN. The performance of
all outcomes is to a standard that is expected in a professional
environment.

the principles of installing a local area computer network.
Explanatory notes

The term Local area computer network (LAN) refers to a single network of personal
computers within the same area, e.g. office or building.

Performance of all outcomes is to be carried out in accordance with organisation
standards and procedures, unless otherwise stated. Organisation standards and
procedures may cover: quality assurance, documentation, security, communication,
health and safety, and personal behaviour. An example of the standards expected is
the standards found in ISO 9000 Certified Organisations.

Performance of all outcomes is to be completed within the normal range of time that
would be expected in a professional environment, e.g. in a commercial or
government organisation.

Performance of all outcomes is to be within the normal range of cost, or cost
estimate, that would be expected in a commercial environment.

The devices complete the manufacturer’s diagnostic tests free of errors.

The devices are located and interconnected according to the manufacturer’s
specifications and the network design.

The devices are configured and customised according to the network design
and the manufacturer’s specifications.

Evidence requirements
5.1
An explanation of the manufacturer supplied operating procedures allows the
user to begin operating the network.
5.2
An explanation of training and support options allows the user to obtain training
and support.
5.3
A review of the installation and installation specification allows the user to judge
that the installation has been completed.
