People credited with this unit standard are able to: test an alternator, remove from the engine, and inspect components; replace brushes and bearings; and assemble and refit the alternator to the engine. Explanatory notes 1 The following legislation and amendments are required to be consulted and followed where applicable: – Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992. 2 Unit standard Range this unit standard covers slip ring type alternators only. 3 Reference to suitable tools and equipment means industry approved tools and equipment that are recognised within the industry as being the most suited to complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices. 4 Because of the particular nature of this unit standard, it is essential that the practical assessment evidence is obtained from commercial jobs in the workplace under normal workplace conditions. Evidence requirements 1.1 Safe working practices are observed throughout the task. Range personal safety, safety of others, equipment and vehicle safety. 1.2 Suitable tools and equipment are selected and used to enable the test and inspection to be carried out. 1.3 The alternator is tested on the vehicle to determine if it is faulty, according to vehicle manufacturer's specifications, and the nature of any faults is identified and noted. 1.4 The alternator is removed from the engine without damage to alternator or associated connections, according to vehicle manufacturer's instructions. 1.5 The alternator is disassembled in the sequence and manner prescribed by the manufacturer, and any signs indicating the cause of faults are noted. 1.6 Mechanical components are inspected for wear and damage, and the need for repair or replacement is determined depending on extent of wear and damage. Range 1.7 case, shaft, pulley, bearings, brushes, slip rings, rotor. Repairs and replacement of components required, other than brushes and bearings, are reported to the supervisor for further action. Outcome 2 Replace brushes and bearings. Evidence requirements 2.1 Safe working practices are observed throughout the task. Range personal safety, safety of others, equipment safety. 2.2 Suitable tools and equipment are selected and used to enable brushes and bearings to be replaced. 2.3 Brushes and bearings are replaced according to vehicle manufacturer's instructions. Evidence requirements 3.1 Safe working practices are observed throughout the task. Range personal safety, safety of others, equipment and vehicle safety. 3.2 Suitable tools and equipment are selected and used to enable the alternator to be assembled and refitted to the vehicle. 3.3 The alternator is assembled in the sequence and manner prescribed by the manufacturer and without damage to any of the parts. 3.4 The alternator is bench tested, and any necessary rectifications made, to ensure that it complies with the manufacturer's specifications for a fully serviceable unit. 3.5 The alternator is refitted to the engine according to vehicle manufacturer's instructions. 3.6 The charging system test results are within vehicle manufacturer's specifications. Replacement information This unit standard and unit standard 5457 have been replaced by unit standard 24654. This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by the last date for assessment set out below.
