Set up and use fixed machinery in the joinery industry under

This pre-entry unit standard is for people who are learning
basic joinery skills.
People credited with this unit standard are able to set up and
use fixed machines to perform their recognised functions, and
describe the maintenance requirements for fixed machines in
the joinery industry, under supervision.

Range
Fixed machines may include but are not limited to – thicknesser, buzzer, bench saw,
bench grinder, drill press, horizontal borer, disc sander, narrow belt sander, drop
saw, radial arm, panel dimension saw;
evidence is required for a minimum of four.

All workplace practices must comply with current legislation, codes of practice, and
documented site safety procedures for personal, product, and worksite safety.

Legislation and regulations relevant to this unit standard include but are not limited to
– Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992; Health and Safety in Employment
Regulations 1995.

Definition
Maintenance requirements are those not requiring the services of a specialist
engineer or service technician.
Under supervision in this instance requires the candidate to be supervised during the
set up and use of fixed machinery.

Evidence requirements
1.1
The machines are set up in accordance with legislation, manufacturer’s
specifications and supervisor’s instructions.
1.2
Jigs and templates are used to meet job specifications and supervisor’s
instructions.
1.3
The material is machined to meet job specifications and supervisor’s
instructions.
Outcome 2
Describe the maintenance requirements for fixed machines in the joinery industry.
Evidence requirements
2.1
The maintenance requirements of cutting edges, points, and grinder wheels are
described in terms of workplace practice.
2.2
The maintenance required to keep fixed machines in working order is described
in terms of workplace practice.

Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA,
before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses
of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
