This unit standard is for people entering the signmaking
industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate
knowledge of: emergency procedures and health and safety
requirements in a signmaking workplace; personal safety
practices in a signmaking workplace; and high level access
equipment used in a signmaking workplace.

requirements.

Responsibilities of employers under the HSE Act are described in terms of the
requirements of a signmaking workplace.

steps to ensure the safety of employees, providing personal
protective clothing and equipment, managing hazards, providing
supervision and training.
Responsibilities and rights of employees under the HSE Act are described in
terms of a signmaking workplace.
Range
responsibilities and rights include but are not limited to – protecting
the health and safety of self and others, using protective clothing
and equipment, the right to refuse unsafe work, the right to be
adequately supervised and/or trained.
Outcome 2
Demonstrate knowledge of personal safety practices in a signmaking workplace.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Situations in a signmaking workplace which present a personal hazard are
identified and described in terms of their impact on the workplace.
Range
evidence of four hazards in the candidate’s workplace is required.
2.2
Process for dealing with first aid requirements in the workplace is identified and
described in terms of company requirements.
2.3
Personal protective equipment (PPE) worn and used in a signmaking workplace
is described in accordance with manufacturers and company requirements.
Range
PPE may include but is not limited to – gloves, earmuffs, eye
protection, high visibility clothing, work boots, hats, machinery,
guards, residual currency devices, safety harnesses, breathing
apparatus;
evidence of four items from the candidate’s workplace is required.
2.4
Process for reporting accidents, incidents and near misses is described in terms
of company requirements.
2.5
Process for identifying, managing and reporting hazards is described in terms of
company requirements.
2.6
Safe practices for handling, lifting and stacking materials are identified and
described in terms of legislative and company requirements.

Process for labelling, storing, handling and using hazardous materials is
described in terms of legislative and company requirements.

Evidence requirements
3.1
Equipment used for access in signmaking work is described in terms of the
situations in which each would be used.
3.2
The safety features of each item of equipment are described.
3.3
Regulations, by-laws and codes of practice governing the use and operation of
each item of equipment are identified.
