Explanatory notes 1 Definitions of Māori words will be those relevant and in common usage in tourism Māori. The dialect must be verified by the local hapū. 2 Definitions Tourism Māori is an indigenous cultural experience of interaction and engagement with manuhiri. Market position is the ranking of a product in terms of its economic volume relative to the sales volume of a competitor in a similar market. A joint venture partner should be an established tourism operator, a commercial entity associated to a hapū/iwi, or an existing whānau based business. Due diligence should be applied to ensure viability of partnership. Tourism Māori product refers to marae stay, Māori cultural experience, historical tour, archaeological tour, adventure tour, nature tour, home stay. 3 This unit standard is designed to assist the learner to identify the uniqueness of Māori culture. It is thought that Māori language expression will enable the learner to gain an understanding of the interconnectedness of Te Ao Māori. By understanding these aspects the learner will be able to highlight the significance for tourism. Where local rohe are also occupied by a number of other iwi or hapū, the tangata whenua or mana whenua view will take precedence. Other iwi or hapū views should be encouraged in order to enrich and enhance understanding of key Māori concepts and practices. Assessment may be presented in a number of ways which may include but are not limited to – haka, oral presentations, pakiwaitara, pūrākau, visual presentations, waiata, whakaari, written presentations. This unit standard may be assessed against in the workplace or in a training provider situation. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Describe existing tourism Māori products and their market position. Range evidence of three tourism Māori products is required. Evidence requirements 1.1 The market position of existing tourism Māori products is described in terms of their value. Range 1.2 Sustainable procedures for existing tourism Māori products are described in terms of the relevance. Range 1.3 value may include but is not limited to – commercial viability, sustainability, validity, employment, spiritual, cultural; evidence of three values is required. sustainable procedures may include but are not limited to – marketing, human resources, compliance, financial planning, strategic planning, business operations; evidence of marketing and two other sustainable procedures is required. Intellectual property rights are identified and explained in terms of Māori artefacts. Range patents, trade marks, designs, plant variety rights, copyright. Range joint tourism venture may include – sole trader, partnership, limited liability company, joint venture of Māori with Māori and/or non-Māori. Evidence requirements 2.1 The potential development of a joint tourism venture between an existing Māori tourism product and an existing non-Māori tourism product is identified and explained in terms of its economic value. Range terms of reference for a feasibility study, relationships required, memorandum of agreement, length of contract period, ownership rights, parties to the agreement.
