Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able with
supervision to: prepare for the installation of refrigeration and
air conditioning systems in vehicles; install refrigeration and air
conditioning system components to the vehicle; and charge the
components of refrigeration and air conditioning systems with
lubricants and secondary heat transfer liquids as required.

Explanatory notes
The following legislation, subsequent amendments, regulations, and code of practice must
be followed where applicable: Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992; Ozone Layer
Protection Act 1996; Resource Management Act 1991; Transport (Vehicle Standards)
Regulations 1990; MTA Automotive Air Conditioning Code Of Practice.

Outcome 1
Prepare for the installation of refrigeration and air conditioning systems in vehicles.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Installation drawings and component instructions are verified with the
supervisor.
1.2
All materials and components needed for installation are verified with the
supervisor, and obtained according to company policy.

1.3
Arrangements are made for the installation and provision of ancillary services
within the specifications, and arrangements are confirmed with the supervisor.

Install refrigeration and air conditioning system components to the vehicle.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Safety precautions are observed when installing components according to
legislative requirements.
Range
personal safety, safety of other people, tool and equipment safety,
vehicle safety.
2.2
Major components are positioned and secured in accordance with drawings,
designs, specifications, and supervisor’s instructions.
2.3
Supports and bracketing to secure pipework are positioned and fixed in
accordance with drawings, designs, specifications, and supervisor’s
instructions.
2.4
Piping, tubing, ducting and insulation are positioned and secured in accordance
with drawings, specifications, and supervisor’s instructions.
2.5
Ancillary components such as valves and controls are installed in accordance
with drawings, specifications, and supervisor’s instructions.
2.6
The work of associated tradespeople is coordinated to enable the installation to
proceed as scheduled.
Outcome 3
Charge the components of refrigeration and air conditioning systems with lubricants and
secondary heat transfer fluids as required.
Evidence requirements
3.1
System and component integrity (no leaks) is confirmed and verified with the
supervisor.
3.2
Components and systems are charged with lubricants and secondary heat
transfer fluids in accordance with system instructions, specifications, industry
codes and regulations, and supervisor’s instructions.

3.3
Identification labels are affixed to systems and components in accordance with
industry codes and regulations and verified with the supervisor.
3.4
The systems are prepared for testing, and documentation is completed
according to company policy.
This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by
the last date for assessment set out below.
