Purpose
This unit standard is for people in the automotive repair
industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
repair a faulty exhaust system on a heavy vehicle and/or
machine; repair a noisy exhaust system on a heavy vehicle
and/or machine; and demonstrate knowledge of making up
exhaust systems to suit heavy vehicle and/or machine
applications.

Critical health and
safety prerequisites
Unit 230, Repair and manufacture automotive components by
oxy-acetylene gas welding, or demonstrate equivalent
knowledge and skills.
Explanatory notes
1
The following legislation, regulations, and their amendments are required to be
consulted and followed where applicable:
– Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992
– Traffic Regulations, 1976.

Reference to suitable tools and equipment means industry approved tools and
equipment that are recognised within the industry as being the most suited to
complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe
working practices.

Because of the particular nature of this unit standard, it is essential that the practical
assessment is carried out on a commercial job in the workplace under normal
workplace conditions.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Repair a faulty exhaust system on a heavy vehicle and/or machine.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.
Range
personal safety, safety of others, equipment safety, vehicle and
machine safety.
1.2
Suitable tools and equipment are selected and used that enable the exhaust
system to be repaired.
1.3
An inspection is carried out on the exhaust system, and any leaks are located
and their sources identified.
1.4
Exhaust components are repaired and/or replaced to comply with
manufacturer's specifications, Traffic Regulations, and to stop any leaks.
Range
pipes, stacks, mufflers, mountings, flange;
removed, tightened, welded, secured, replaced with new parts.
Outcome 2
Repair a noisy exhaust system on a heavy vehicle and/or machine.
Range
noises other than those caused by leaking exhaust gas.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Safe working practices are observed throughout the task.
Range
personal safety, safety of others, equipment safety, vehicle and
machine safety.
2.2
Suitable tools and equipment are selected and used that enable the exhaust
system to be repaired.
2.3
The vehicle and/or machine is operated to reproduce the offending noise, and
to verify whether the noise is exhaust system sourced.
2.4
The exhaust system is checked for loose internal parts and blockages, and any
faults are rectified.
2.5
Damaged components, and components that are the source of the noise, are
replaced to comply with manufacturer's specifications and Traffic Regulations.
2.6
The system is checked to ensure security of attachment.

System mounting points are checked to ensure that they are not faulty.

Evidence requirements
3.1
Procedures to determine exhaust system requirements are identified.
Range
3.2
obtaining customer requirements, determining the vehicle's and/or
machine's ability to suit the requirements, physical size and
positioning on the vehicle and/or machine, gas flow, spark
arresters for forestry applications.
Procedures to make up and fit an exhaust system are identified.
Range
identifying and obtaining components and materials; ensuring the
exhaust system complies to the supervisor's and customer's
requirements, and to the regulations particular to the vehicle
and/or machine; fitting and mounting the system.

This unit standard has been replaced by unit standard
24191 and unit standard 24192.

an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can
report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading
to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
