Bielanski explained that BCC's move to accelerated English is part of a statewide initiative. Data shows that students can be successful in these types of courses and the decrease in time/terms leads to more completers. College representatives expressed some concerns, including whether such an accelerated course is appropriate for all students/if students will choose an accelerated course for time purposes when it may not be right for them. COA and MC expressed that there was some concern among English faculty at their respective colleges but also expressed openness to the idea. Isela Santana, English chair at MC, presented as a guest. She expressed that MC is concerned that the accelerated sequence is not a good fit for the college. However, there seemed to be confusion about what was being asked. It was explained that this would not be a replacement of the sequence just an additional prerequisite for ENGL 1A. Discussion also ensued as to whether English faculty should all get together to discuss. Some felt this was a good idea, while others mentioned that it had been tried but there is still disagreement. There are possibly very few English faculty against this but their opinions are expressed loudly. Send approved proposals to the Board Amany ElMasry November 2015 Tram Vu-Kumamoto to contact each curriculum chair to set up a meeting/attend curriculum committee meetings to discuss proposal. Tram VuKumamoto/ Alejandria Tomas October 2015 Amany ElMasry October 2015 Place item on November 2015 CIPD agenda. T. Vu-Kumamoto stated that she will be happy to visit each campus to explain the proposal. It was decided that BCC will contact each curriculum chair to set up a time. The item will be tabled until November CIPD. Temporary v permanent deactivation A. ElMasry posted summary of the temporary v permanent deactivation decisions previously discussed at CIPD in the Dropbox. It was discussed how temporary deactivations will be tracked. Curriculum Specialists are to keep a list of such deactivations and will let AOs know when the two year mark is reached. It was decided that permanent deactivations are now to be called "deactivations" and temporary deactivations are now to be called "hibernations". Adult Education Program Development, Presented by Lisa Cook Revised Uniform Course Numbering System update Laney ESL instructor Lisa Cook discussed the statewide and district initiative to create adult education/noncredit programs and that funding for courses in such programs are now equalized with credit courses. Programs will be sequences of courses that lead to literacy and competency to move on a pathway toward college-level work, transfer, and various careers. The first proposal will be at MC. This will consist of two certificates that represent a partnership between ESL and Child Development. F. Banga and A. ElMasry updated the group on the status and proposals for course renumbering. There are essentially two main proposals on the table at this time: keep current numbers as they are and move new courses to the new 1000+ numbers; or keep all courses 1-199 the same, transferable courses will be 1-1999 and courses 200+ will be moved to 2000+ (e.g. 221 would become 2021). Keep a list of temporary deactivations (hibernations) and alert AOs when two years has been reached Curriculum Specialists Ongoing A ElMasry By next edition of PCAPM Amany ElMasry and/or representativ es from renumbering committee October/November 2015 Update PCAPM with new deactivation process and titles (deactivations and hibernations) Amany ElMasry and/or representatives from renumbering committee to meet with CFT It was stated that feedback is needed from CFT to get more information from A&R, counseling and transcripts.
