We are therefore adding this course as the next logical step in our expansion of that language program. The course also meets student demand and will be eligible for transfer. This course equips students with an educated form of spoken Arabic that functions flexibly in the face of various regional colloquial variants in the Arab world. Because the Arabic language has a number of very different spoken vernaculars, being able to speak and be understood in all Arab countries has become a challenge for English speakers. This course teaches a standardized variant of spoken Arabic that is close to, but more natural than, the literary Modern Standard Arabic. Note: Course is offered only by BCC. BERKELEY CITY COLLEGE Approved by CIPD 2/4/08: ARAB 30A BEGINNING CONVERSATIONAL ARABIC 3 units, 3 hours lecture (GR or CR/NC) Acceptable for credit: CSU Introduction to conversational Arabic: Use of modern formal spoken Arabic in conversation and discussion; elementary grammar. 1112.00/16.1101 New CB00 needed Informational Items: Approved by CIPD 2/4/08: HUMAN 40 RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD (Approved Distance Education Addendum) M08 Approved by CIPD 2/4/08: SPAN 39 LATIN AMERICAN NOVEL (Approved Distance Education Addendum) M08 A distance education version of this course provides an alternative mode of attending and doing the coursework at a time that is more convenient for non-traditional students, who would otherwise not be able to attend the class. Furthermore, distance education courses help to generate more room space. Note: Course is offered only by BCC. We are offering this version on a contract basis to UC Berkeley employees. Further analysis of the needs of all ESL students by PEAC will determine the structure for future versions of ESL 262. Note: Course is offered only by BCC. Many students know that they are interested in health care and/or science, so they start taking courses without a clear idea of the options available to them, and of how they can best achieve their objectives. There are thousands of students at Merritt alone who are taking Nursing prerequisites simply because they have heard about the great employment opportunities in Nursing. However, not all of them are optimally suited to a career in health care, nor would they find it fulfilling. Even if they are exquisitely suited to nursing, the majority of them will not be able to enroll in a nursing or radiology program, since admissions are so competitive. Furthermore, the choices in health care careers can be very confusing, especially to students without prior connections to the field. This course is a general survey of a wide variety of career options that all require some aptitude towards science. It will help students route themselves into science courses and into rewarding careers.
