The beginning Arabic courses offered in 2007 were
well received. We are therefore adding this course
as the next logical step in our expansion of that
language program. The course also meets student
demand and will be eligible for transfer. This course
equips students with an educated form of spoken
Arabic that functions flexibly in the face of various
regional colloquial variants in the Arab world.
Because the Arabic language has a number of very
different spoken vernaculars, being able to speak
and be understood in all Arab countries has become
a challenge for English speakers. This course
teaches a standardized variant of spoken Arabic
that is close to, but more natural than, the literary
Modern Standard Arabic.
Note: Course is offered only by BCC.

Tai Chi Chuan is a lifelong body conditioning activity
that is becoming increasingly in demand. It has
been requested by both Laney students and the
local community. It will be transferable to the CSU
and UC systems. We've had many requests to
initiate some classes and feel confident we can fill
them. With proximity to Oakland's China Town and
its loss of its current class venue at the Lake Merritt
BART facility, this is a timely class for increased
enrollment and community outreach.

This is a preparatory course for the proposed
Microscopy Technician program, as well as for the
Histopathology program. Each of these programs
address an important opportunity, as there is an
escalating demand for microscopy technicians in
Silicon Valley, and in biotech industries and for
clinical histopathologists. To date no local college is
doing a histopathology program, although there is
much interest for it in hospitals, labs and clinics.
Graduates can earn $50,000-60,000/year as their
starting salary. Merritt College has the faculty
expertise and the equipment necessary to institute a
similar program. This introductory course will also
be of interest to a variety of other students, including
artists, engineers, photographers, and biology
majors.

This course is an integral part of the first semester
curriculum for our new Certificate in Bioscience
Microscopy, which starts in Spring 2008. In general,
this course is part of the new Merritt Microscopy
Program which responds to the employment
opportunities arising from the escalating demand for
microscopy technicians in Silicon Valley, and in
biotech industries. Cell culture is a critical skill to
develop in order to obtain these jobs. It is also a
course that will draw a variety of other students,
since it is a skill in high demand in the biotech and
academic research fields.

S08/M08
This course will help students make informed
choices about their career paths in health care or
science. Many students know that they are
interested in health care and/or science, so they
start taking courses without a clear idea of the
options available to them, and of how they can best
achieve their objectives. There are thousands of
students at Merritt alone who are taking Nursing
prerequisites simply because they have heard about
the great employment opportunities in Nursing.
However, not all of them are optimally suited to a
career in health care, nor would they find it fulfilling.
Even if they are exquisitely suited to nursing, the
majority of them will not be able to enroll in a
nursing or radiology program, since admissions are
so competitive. Furthermore, the choices in health
care careers can be very confusing, especially to
students without prior connections to the field. This
course is a general survey of a wide variety of
career options that all require some aptitude
towards science. It will help students route
themselves into science courses and into rewarding
careers.
