NZQA registered unit standard 2587 version 8 Page 1 of 5 Title Implement process decisions to generate Māori design Level 5 Purpose Credits 8 This unit standard is for people furthering their knowledge and practice in whakairo. It supplements the Mana Whakairo and Whakaraupapa Whakairo unit standards. People credited with this unit standard are able to: select tribal style, application method, surface quality, material quality and tools; and consider media and the quality of material to generate Māori design. Classification Whakairo > Toi Whakairo Available grade Achieved Entry information Critical health and safety prerequisites Unit 2581, Explain design principles used to generate twodimensional Māori design; Unit 2583, Explain pattern conventions used to generate whakairo design; and Unit 2598, Carve material surfaces to create Māori art; or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. Recommended skills and knowledge Unit 2582, Explain design principles used to generate threedimensional whakairo design; Unit 2584, Define Māori art images to generate whakairo design; Unit 2585, Define Māori art forms to generate Māori design; and Unit 2599, Carve relief form to create Māori art. Explanatory notes Glossary Style, composition and function refer only to conventions associated with traditional Māori art; Project intentions – the requirements and considerations as specified by the accredited deliverer of this unit standard; Quality – the intrinsic or essential nature of the entity concerned. Evidence requirements 1.1 Tribal style is selected, and identified to realise Māori design convention and project intention. Outcome 2 Select application method. Evidence requirements 2.1 Application method is selected to maintain Māori design convention and project intention. Range drawing, carving, painting, stitching, smoking. Outcome 3 Select surface quality. Evidence requirements 3.1 Surface quality is nominated to realise Māori design convention and project intention. Range natural, manipulated, combined natural and manipulated. Outcome 4 Select material quality. Evidence requirements 4.1 Material quality is selected to maintain Māori design convention and project intention. Range raw, manufactured. Evidence requirements 5.1 Tools are selected to maintain Māori design convention and project intention. Range traditional, modern; hand, power. Outcome 6 Consider media. Evidence requirements 6.1 Inherent properties of media are resolved determining tool and technique selection to maintain Māori design conventions and project intentions. 6.2 Constraints on media dictating adjustments are required to accord with Māori design conventions and project intentions. Range traditional, modern alternatives. Outcome 7 Consider the quality of materials to generate Māori design. Evidence requirements 7.1 Characteristics of structural properties are assessed to maintain project intentions. Range 7.2 Moisture content is measured to determine conditions of natural deformation. Range 7.3 hard, soft; weak, strong. Grain characteristics are checked to determine grain quality. Range 7.5 splitting, crumbling, disintegrating. Density is checked to determine tensile strength. Range 7.4 fibrous, pulp, resinous, grain, temper, moist. twisted, straight, knotted, tight, open. Harvested properties are assessed to prevent decay. Please note Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
