Walker, Ranginui, Nga Tautohetohe 3 Maori were heavily involved in the media prior to the 1880s with a significant number of Maori language newspapers in circulation. Maori literacy rates were high compared to literacy rates of settlers. However, there has been minimal representation in the media industry since that time. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Examine the role of the media in New Zealand. Evidence requirements 1.1 The examination discusses the different types of media. Range 1.2 types can include - newspapers; magazines; television; radio; music; movies; books. The examination details the purposes of the media in society. Outcome 2 Analyse the present political background of the media. Evidence requirements 2.1 Analysis examines political positions within major media publications. 2.2 Analysis examines core clientele of types of mainstream media. 2.3 Analysis examines ownership issues current within the media world. 2.4 Analysis examines the development of Māori media and its impact on the reporting of Māori events. Range issues which impact on the development of Māori media can include - Māori newspapers in the 1900s; development of Māori radio; establishment of Te Māngai Pāho; Māori television; Māori publications; Maori publishing companies; use of te reo Māori in the media. Outcome 3 Explain the different ways in which a Māori historical event was reported. Evidence requirements 3.1 Explanation identifies the types of media coverage which reported the event. 3.2 Explanation identifies the perspectives and representations of each of the different media reports. Outcome 4 Analyse how the way in which the event was reported led to further feedback and reporting. Evidence requirements 4.1 The analysis includes the impact of the different reports on public opinion. 4.2 The analysis includes further feedback and events resulting from the media reports.
