Explanatory notes
1
Reo Māori media refers to the use of te reo Māori incorporating tikanga and kaupapa
Māori in the media.

The report is delivered in te reo Māori.

The research completed in evidence requirement 2.2 forms the basis of the report
required for outcome 3.

This unit standard can be assessed in a work-based environment, or in a training and
education environment if simulated media and Māori culture conditions are provided

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of Māori participation in local government systems.
Evidence requirements
1.1
The functions of two local government bodies and/or agencies and the services
they provide are identified and described in terms of Māori participation.
1.2
The demonstration includes an overview of Māori participation in local
government.
Range
may include but is not limited to – whānau, hapū, iwi based
groups, urban organisations, marae committees.
Outcome 2
Research local government issues relevant to Māori.
Evidence requirements
2.1
A local government decision/policy issue is researched and analysed in terms of
its impact on Māori.
Range
2.2
A Māori community issue requiring local government action is researched and
analysed in terms of its impact on the Māori community.
Range
2.3
research sources may include but are not limited to – local
government meetings, media releases, annual plans, budgets,
reports, speeches, media conferences, personal contacts.
research sources may include but are not limited to – hui,
tangihanga, rūnanga, kura, marae, kohanga, meetings and
reports.
Local government decisions or policies are analysed in terms of the impact on
Māori using evidence from evidence requirements 2.1 and 2.2
Outcome 3
Report on a Māori community issue requiring local government action.

Evidence requirements
3.1
Newsworthy points gained from the issue in evidence requirement 2.2 are
accurately summarised and interpreted for the readers and/or listeners and
meets the director’s and/or supervisor’s approval.

3.2
The report comments on the success and effectiveness of any Māori
participation aiming to address the issues.
3.3
Report includes accuracy and balance, while adhering to legal and ethical
responsibilities.
Range

plagiarism, sensitivity to people under stress.
3.4
Field notes and recordings are archived for review purposes in accordance with
the organisation’s tikanga and kawa.
3.5
The report complies with style conventions that are applicable to radio, print and
television as appropriate.

Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies
to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMRs). The
CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing
to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors
and assessors, and special resource requirements.
