This unit standard is for people furthering their knowledge in
whakairo. It supplements the Toi Whakairo and
Whakaraupapa Whakairo unit standards.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: observe
spiritual beliefs, practice personal responsibilities; and observe
and examine carver’s responsibilities.

Mana Whakairo
Tikanga and kawa that underpin the standards in the domain Mana Whakairo relate
to specific interpretations and understandings of whakapapa, te reo, symbolism,
concepts and representation; and in a whakairo context are quite specific and
therefore distinctive from tikanga and kawa in the broader context of Te Ao Māori
whānui.

ritual procedure that accords with hapū or iwi spiritual observance.

Respect for nature is practised by assuming responsibility for resource
perpetuation that accords with hapū or iwi traditions and the Resource
Management Act 1991 and any subsequent amendments.
