NZQA registered unit standard 2571 version 9 Page 1 of 4 Title Appreciate mana whenua for a whakairo context through te reo Level 3 Purpose Credits 10 This unit standard is intended for students who are interested in taha Māori and who can communicate basic greetings in te reo Māori. People credited with this unit standard are able to, recite karakia; sing waiata, translate waiata-a-iwi, and compose and present a whaikōrero in te reo Māori to be used in a formal situation. Classification Whakairo > Mana Whakairo Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Mana Whakairo Tikanga and kawa that underpin the standards in the domain Mana Whakairo relate to specific interpretations and understandings of whakapapa, te reo, symbolism, concepts and representation; and in a whakairo context are quite specific and therefore distinctive from tikanga and kawa in the broader context of Te Ao Māori whānui. 2 Glossary mana whenua – Māori authority over land area or region; rangi – sound(s); kupu – word(s); awa – river; maunga – mountain. 3 Assessment against this unit standard is to be conducted by a fluent speaker of te reo Māori. Evidence requirements 1.1 Karakia are recited correctly in solo situation. Range at least one karakia from a whakairo context. Outcome 2 Sing waiata. Evidence requirements 2.1 Waiata are sung in a manner ensuring endorsement for the rangi and kupu. Range at least one waiata required from a whakairo context. Outcome 3 Translate waiata-a-iwi. Evidence requirements 3.1 Waiata-a-iwi are translated correctly. Range at least one waiata-a-iwi is translated. Outcome 4 Compose whaikōrero to be used in a formal situation. Range including but not limited to – pōwhiri, tangihanga, mihi. Evidence requirements 4.1 Whaikōrero establishing mana whenua are composed in a manner ensuring endorsement for grammatical structure and kaupapa by a fluent speaker of te reo. Range including but not limited to – maunga, awa, iwi, waka.
