Purpose
This qualification recognises the skills and knowledge required of advanced operators in
the solid wood manufacturing industries.
The Core Elective section ensures that they can investigate production issues and lead
process improvement or analyse financial factors that impact on production. It also shares
standards in common with the National Certificate in Wood Fibre Manufacturing (Wood
Panels) (Level 4) with strands in Composite Panel Manufacturing, Overlay Bonding, and
Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) and Plywood Manufacturing [Ref: 1310] that recognise a
common set of skills required by employees across the wood manufacturing industries at
the advanced operator level.
This qualification’s strands recognise the competencies required to work in a range of
advanced roles in solid wood manufacturing including:





benching, maintaining and aligning circular and bandsaws used in saw doctoring
operations
grading of logs, operation of primary breakdown saws, optimisation, size control and
troubleshooting of sawmill operations
plan and apply process controls and operate kiln drying equipment in timber drying
operations
applying grade specifications and grading techniques, verifying and auditing of product
and processes, and maintaining mechanical flow in timber grading operations
planning and applying process controls and applying advanced preservation
techniques used in timber treatment operations.
This qualification allows the advanced operator to combine the technical competencies in
one of these strands with the leadership and process improvement or financial skills in the
core elective section, and as a result to contribute to driving the industry to greater
cost-effectiveness and production efficiency.
This qualification follows on from the National Certificate in Solid Wood Manufacturing
(Level 3) with strands in Engineered Wood Product Operations; Planer Operations; Pole,
Post and Pile Operations; Saw Doctoring Operations; Sawmilling Operations; Timber
Drying Operations; Timber Grading; and Timber Treatment Operations [Ref: 1693].

strands in Sawmilling, Timber Grading, Timber Yarding, Wood Drying, and Wood
Preservation [Ref: 0809]; and part of the National Certificate in Wood Panels
Manufacturing (Level 4) [Ref: 0254].
The Saw Doctoring strand of this qualification replaced the National Certificate in Saw
Doctoring (Level 4) [Ref: 0811].
Special Notes
It is recommended that candidates hold the National Certificate in Solid Wood
Manufacturing (Level 3) with strands in Engineered Wood Product Operations, Laminated
Veneer Lumber (LVL) and Plywood Operations, Planer Operations, Pole and Post
Operations, Saw Centre Operations, Timber Drying Operations, Timber Grading
Operations, Timber Treatment Operations, Veneer Preparation, Wood Product Operations,

Requirements for Award of Qualification
Award of NZQF National Qualifications
Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.
Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the
purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided on the New Zealand Qualifications
Authority (NZQA) website: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/standards/standards-exclusionlist/.
Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions
and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet
qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.
