Purpose
This qualification is designed to recognise the higher order skills required in the practice of
farriery. The holder of this qualification is able to diagnose hoof problems, make and fit
corrective shoes, and will have the business skills necessary to practice as an
independent farrier.
The qualification requires people to obtain advanced farrier skills through the compulsory
section and to learn a range of business skills to assist in running a small business through
the elective section.
Special Notes
The National Certificate in Equine Farriery (Level 4) [Ref: 0217], or an equivalent approved
overseas qualification recognised by the New Zealand Farriers Association is necessary
as a prerequisite to this qualification.

Requirements for Award of Qualification
This qualification will be awarded to people who have met the requirements of the
compulsory and elective sections.
Award of NQF Qualifications
Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.
Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the
purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided in the Qualifications Authority Rules
and Procedures publications available at www.nzqa.govt.nz/ncea/.
Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions
and retain their identification number (Id). Any version of a standard with the same Id may be used to meet
qualification requirements that list the Id and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.

Previous versions of the qualification
Version 3 was reviewed and issued in April 2004 as part of an overall Equine qualification
review. Changes to both compulsory and elective sections reflect current industry skill
needs.
Changes to structure and content
 unit standard 20442 added to the compulsory section
 compulsory section credits increased from 80 to 105
 credits required in the elective section have decreased from 40 to 15
 level added to the qualification title.

All existing candidates may complete version 2 of this qualification or transfer their existing
achievements to version 3.
This qualification contains standards that replace earlier standards. For the purposes of
this qualification people who have gained credit for the expiring standard are exempt from
the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standard.

Version 2 was issued following a review of the Equine unit standards. No changes were
made to the structure and content of the qualification however, reviewed unit standards
were updated.

before they can register credits from assessment against standards. Accredited providers and Industry
