Element 1
Describe materials for Māori customary nets.
Performance criteria
1.1
Māori customary net-making materials are described in terms of natural
resources used and their availability and sustainability.
Range
natural resources include but are not limited to – harakeke, muka,
aka, bone, needles.
1.2
Māori customary net making knots and their application are described in terms
of their specifications and usage.
1.3
Types and styles of net mesh are explained in terms of species of intended
catch.
Element 2
Maintain nets using Māori customary methods and techniques.
Performance criteria
2.1
Procedures and protocols used for maintaining nets meet tikanga requirements.
2.2
Preparation, usage and storage stages of Māori customary nets are explained
in accordance with net type requirements.
2.3
Māori customary nets are prepared and stored in accordance with net type
requirements and tikanga.
Element 3
Repair nets using Māori customary methods and techniques.
Range
may include but is not limited to – lastridges, selvedges, guardings, splices,
plaits and knots, panels, kaha ringa, hahu raro, pae runga, pae raro, pourākau,
uru, ngake, whakahihi, matakēkē, kahatū.
Performance criteria
3.1
Materials, tools and techniques for Māori customary net repair are described in
accordance with net type requirements and tikanga.
3.2
Materials compatible to the net repair are prepared to net type specifications
and tikanga.
3.3
Repair meets net style and net type requirements and tikanga.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
