NZQA registered unit standard 26844 version 1 Page 1 of 3 Title Locate and summarise, critique, and evaluate fisheries research relevant to an iwi fisheries asset management context Level 5 Purpose Credits 15 People credited with this unit standard are able to: locate and summarise fisheries research relevant to the selected Iwi Fisheries Asset Management system of the mandated iwi organisation; critique the selected fisheries research; and evaluate the potential impact of the research findings on the selected Iwi Fisheries Asset Management system of the mandated iwi organisation. This unit standard is for people who are looking to extend their experience, skills and knowledge in working within Iwi Fisheries management asset contexts. Classification Seafood Māori > Kaupapa Mātaitai Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Fisheries Act 1996 and associated regulations such as the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998; Fisheries (Amateur Fishing) Regulations 1986, specifically regulation 27A; Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999; Biosecurity Act 1993; Te Ture Whenua Maori/Maori Land Act 1993, Maori Fisheries Act 2004; Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975; Treaty of Waitangi (Fisheries Claims) Settlement Act 1992 and subsequent amendments. 2 Definitions Research is systematic investigation and study in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions. This may include but is not limited to using appropriate print and electronic resources such as stock assessment reports; iwi fisheries management company visits and interviews, engagement with iwi or hapū. For the purposes of this unit standard, research requires the accurate citing of reference sources. Specifically for Outcome 3, research findings refers to the output from Outcomes 1 and 2. Iwi Fisheries Asset Management refers to managing fish quota, fisheries, or fish species that Mandated Iwi Organisations are responsible for. This may be at a local, regional (hapū) or iwi level. Mandated Iwi Organisation (MIO), in relation to an iwi, means an organisation recognised by Te Ohu Kai Moana Trustee Limited as the representative organisation of that iwi under the Maori Fisheries Act 2004. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Locate and summarise fisheries research relevant to the selected Iwi Fisheries Asset Management system of the MIO. Evidence requirements 1.1 Research questions from the fisheries research are defined in terms of its purpose. 1.2 Information sources containing fisheries research are identified. 1.3 Fisheries research is selected and research findings are accessed. 1.4 The research is summarised. Range research questions, introduction, methodology, results. Outcome 2 Critique the selected fisheries research. Evidence requirements 2.1 The critique explains the methodology employed in achieving the findings in the selected fisheries research. Range 2.2 may include but is not limited to – research design; identification of sources of information; literature review; information gathering techniques; quantitative and qualitative analysis. The appropriateness of the research methodology is critiqued in terms of the identified research questions. Outcome 3 Evaluate the potential impact of the research findings on the selected Iwi Fisheries Asset Management system of the MIO. Range impacts include cultural, social, environmental and economic; includes commercial and customary iwi fisheries interests. Evidence requirements 3.1 Research findings are compared, contrasted and evaluated to determine areas for improved efficiency and sustainability.
