Classification Te Ara Nunumi - Bereavement Pathways Māori > Te Ara Nunumi - Ā-Kiko Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Definitions Tikanga are cultural practices and procedures exercised by Māori in their daily lives. These practices reflect the concepts upon which they are based and provide guidelines for appropriate behaviour in Māori society. They also prescribe consequences for any breaches or when tikanga is not followed. They can be particular to a local marae, whānau, hapū, iwi. Other interment practices are those followed where interment does not take place in an urupā. Interment may take place in a public cemetery, at sea, or other place (especially for the disposal of ashes). 2 Legislation relevant to this unit standard include but are not limited to – Burial and Cremation Act 1964, Health (Burial) Regulations 1946, Burial and Cremation (Removal of Monuments and Tablets) Regulations 1967, Coroners Act 2006; and relevant local government bylaws. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Describe and compare interment practices in an urupā with other interment practices. Evidence requirements 1.1 Describe interment practices in an urupā in accordance with tikanga. Range evidence of two practices is required.
