Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to explain: the
causes of unplanned pregnancy; socio-economic impacts on
individuals and whānau of unplanned pregnancy; the cultural
impacts of unplanned pregnancy on whānau; and the concepts
of whāngai and atawhai in relation to support for unplanned
pregnancy.

Explanatory notes
1
The context of inquiries is limited to local rohe and takiwā. Where local rohe are also
occupied by Māori with other iwi or hapū affiliations, the tangata whenua or mana
whenua view takes precedence. However, these alternative perspectives should be
encouraged in order to enrich and enhance understanding of key oranga concepts.

Descriptions, explanations, and observable actions can be presented in a number of
ways that may include but are not limited to – kōrero, titiro, whakarongo, tuhituhi,
whakaari, waiata, and haka presentations.

Explanation describes the concept of whāngai as distinct from adoption and
how it may be used to provide support in an unplanned pregnancy.

Explanation describes the concept of atawhai as distinct from whāngai and
adoption and how it may be used to provide temporary support for an
unplanned pregnancy.
