People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare
survival craft for launch; respond to abandon vessel orders;
and implement sea survival procedures.

These activities are carried out under the control of a
supervising officer as appropriate.

Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is
not limited to – Maritime Transport Act 1994, and
Maritime Rules.

Survival equipment includes: survival craft which may
be open lifeboat, enclosed lifeboat with in-board engine,
inflatable boat with out-board engine, inflatable life raft;
life jackets; survival craft exposure suits; immersion
suits; emergency distress communications equipment;
floats; and ring and buoyancy aids.

Elements and Performance Criteria
element 1
Prepare survival craft for launch.
performance criteria
1.1
Vessel’s survival craft are checked routinely in accordance with company
standing orders, for seaworthiness, and quality and quantity of emergency
stores.
Range:
records of the quality and quantities of emergency stores in each
craft are maintained in accordance with legislation.
1.2
The survival craft and its equipment are operated in accordance with
manufacturer's instructions.
1.3
Shortfalls and unserviceable equipment and emergency stores are identified
and remedial action is sought immediately.
Range:
1.4
remedial action may include – personally rectifying the situation, or
informing the supervising officer of the shortfall or unserviceability.
Documentation relating to the completion of survival craft checks is completed,
and either filed correctly or passed to the supervising officer for action.
Range:
records of the seaworthiness of survival craft are maintained in
accordance with Maritime policy and procedures and would
include – details of defects and actions taken, maintenance
performed on survival equipment carried in the craft.

Response to abandon vessel order is in accordance with company standing
orders or master’s instructions.

2.2
Evacuation, emergency shutdown, and isolation procedures are implemented
according to company standing orders.
Range:
2.3
Method of raising alarm meets the emergency situation and the action taken by
personnel on identifying the alarm complies with vessel’s mustering procedures.

survival craft may be launched by – hand, davit and gyro static
release.
Boarding of survival craft is in accordance with the recognised maritime safety
procedures, and in such a manner as to maximise personal safety.

methods of raising alarm include – verbal, phone, automatic or
manual bell or siren type systems, vessel's whistle, vessel’s PA
system.
Survival craft is prepared for launching in accordance with the company
standing orders.

emergency shutdown and isolation of plant and equipment are
performed within the range of responsibility of the individual.
survival craft may be boarded – prior to launching, through the use
of ladders and scramble nets directly into the boat, from the sea.
Personnel required at a designated station are accounted for and verified as
correctly dressed and equipped.

3.1
The procedures established for the safety of life at sea are followed in order to
maximise personal safety.
3.2
Actions taken to maintain the personal safety of crew and passengers, including
the injured, are consistent with preserving life.
3.3
Suitable clothing is worn in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications
and the demands of the climatic conditions.

Survival equipment is used in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications
and meets the demands of the climatic conditions.
