special notes:
Cargo handling equipment includes: cranes, derricks, lifting
devices, hyabs and forklifts; pumps and pumpline systems;
hatch and door controls; dry bulk self-discharging systems;
tank cleaning and draining equipment, hatch cleaning and
draining systems; ballast systems; and hoists (interdeck) and
nets.
Operations are conducted under the direction of the officer
responsible for cargo operations.
Safety rules and regulations include: the International
Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and
Watchkeeping (STCW), 1978, Resolution 10, 11 and 12;
Marine Orders; general harbour and Safe Working Load
Regulations; statutory regulations; and Code of Safe
Working Practice.

Cargo types may include: containerised, RORO, deck cargo,
refrigerated, dry and liquid bulk, vehicles and heavy lifts,
livestock, general cargo, gas and hazardous goods, and
break bulk.
Protective clothing may include: boots, gloves, suits, helmets,
glasses, ear defenders, face masks, breathing apparatus.
Documentation includes: Deck Log Book and Cargo Log
Book and details of cargo times and events, and reports and
claims for damage or loss of cargo and equipment.
Knowledge supporting this unit standard includes equipment
operations and operating principles.

Arrange personnel and equipment for cargo operations.
performance criteria
1.1
Personnel required to complete cargo handling operations safely are briefed on
the handling, stowage and safety considerations for the operation.
1.2
Equipment checks are conducted prior to operations to ensure all activities are
conducted in accordance with safety rules and regulations.
1.3
Reports received on the condition of cargo are evaluated, and where the
maintenance of safety or cargo condition is at risk, action is taken (either
personally or the situation is communicated clearly and concisely to the correct
officer), with the objective of minimising the risk to personnel, equipment or the
ship.

1.4
Preparatory activities are completed with the time frame allocated for the
operation and meet industry standards for the type of cargo to be carried.

2.1
Transfer operations are completed in accordance with the loading or discharge
plan, industry rules and regulations.
2.2
Hazardous cargo handling operations are completed in accordance with
industry codes and legislative requirements.
2.3
Protective clothing and equipment is worn and used in accordance with the
manufacturer’s instructions, where the cargo type warrants such measures.
2.4
Potential hazards to operations are anticipated, identified and eliminated.
2.5
Reports received on the condition of cargo are evaluated, and where the
maintenance of safety is at risk (action is taken either personally or the
situation is communicated clearly and concisely to the correct officer) with the
objective of minimising the risk to personnel and equipment of the ship.
2.6
Where cargo is presented in other than clean condition, measures are initiated
to protect the carrier’s position in respect to cargo claims.
2.7
Documentation relating to the cargo handling operation is completed accurately
within the correct log book.
