NZQA Expiring unit standard 1596 version 6 Page 1 of 4 Title Gear up and drive standardbred horses in trackwork, and attend to horses after trackwork Level 3 Purpose Credits 15 This unit standard is intended for people who are required to prepare and drive standardbred horses in trackwork in an equine racing industry context. People will be working under broad guidance with responsibility for their work routines. Classification Equine>Equine Care Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Demonstration of competency must be consistent with: Workplace and/or stable procedures Raceclub procedures Racetrack bylaws The New Zealand Rules of Harness Racing Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 Code of Welfare: Horses and Donkeys available at http://www.mpi.govt.nz . 2 Candidates must demonstrate competency in the context of a commercial business operation under normal working conditions. 3 Demonstration of understanding may be assessed in a number of ways, which could include ability to complete practical tasks, if it is clear that the understanding is essential underpinning knowledge to the task/s, and that the task/s could not be completed without the candidate having that knowledge. 4 In the context of this unit standard, understanding means that there should be evidence of a learners’ thorough comprehension of a topic. A learner with a good understanding of a topic should have applied, or should be able to apply what they have learnt to a workplace situation and will be able to alter their practices to the different contexts they are applying their learning to. Assessors should be confident that the learners’ understanding is embedded in their practices and behaviour. Evidence requirements 1.1 Fits and secures conventional or quick hitch harness. 1.2 Fits accessories. 1.3 Fits a bridle with bit, and with reins secured. 1.4 Attaches sulky to the horse. 1.5 Selects and applies gear to help correct problems of performance. 1.6 Reports ill-fitting and unsafe equipment. Outcome 2 Prepare self and horse for driving. Evidence requirements 2.1 Prepares self in protective equipment and clothing. 2.2 Carries out final check to gear. 2.3 Releases horse maintaining control of the horse. Outcome 3 Drive horse in trackwork as instructed. Evidence requirements 3.1 Warms up and works the horse maintaining control, and at a pace, time and distance as specified by trainer. 3.2 Returns the horse to gearing up area following completion of pace work. 3.3 Drives the horse according to the rules of the exercise area. Outcome 4 Provide a verbal report on the way the horse completed the workout. Outcome 5 Attend to post exercise activities. Evidence requirements 5.1 Removes gear methodically. 5.2 Washes and cools the horse and replaces covers. 5.3 Cleans and stores gear. 5.4 Releases the horse into an area as instructed by the supervisor or trainer. Outcome 6 Clean, check, and store sulkies and work carts. Evidence requirements 6.1 Cleans surfaces of sulkies and work carts. 6.2 Checks working condition of sulkies and work carts and reports any problems. 6.3 Stores sulkies and work carts. Outcome 7 Demonstrate understanding of training principles, and technologies that are commonly in use to aid training. Evidence requirements 7.1 Describes the principles of training to improve a horse’s performance. 7.2 Describes principles of technologies commonly used to aid training. Range: evidence is required for at least two technologies. Replacement information This unit standard and unit standard 1598 has been replaced by unit standard 29232. This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by the last date for assessment set out below.
