NZQA Expiring unit standard 2421 version 7 Page 1 of 3 Title Mechanically cut fabrication materials using powered machinery under supervision Level 3 Credits 10 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are, under supervision, able to prepare, perform, and verify the mechanical cutting of fabrication materials using powered machinery. Classification Mechanical Engineering > Engineering - Fabrication Available grade Achieved Entry information Critical health and safety prerequisites Unit 2417, Mechanically cut fabrication materials under supervision; or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. Explanatory notes 1 This unit standard is for people who are performing mechanical cutting operations using powered equipment under supervision in the fabrication industry. 2 The fabrication industry involves working with a wide range of material types, shapes and thicknesses. Material types include low carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, aluminium alloys, copper alloys, and plastics. Shapes include sheet, plate, and sections. 3 This unit standard is For credit, assessment must involve more than one material type, more than one expiring shape, more than one thickness, with a material range of either: a or b 4 0.4mm to 6mm sheet and plate – light walled pipe – small structural section, angle, and rolled hollow section; 3mm plate upwards – heavy walled pipe – large cross sectional angle, beam and rolled hollow section. Assessment must be across a range of mechanical cutting operations. Mechanical cutting machines may include guillotines, croppers, cutoff saws, drop saws, punches and notchers, jig saws, band saws and bevellers. Power may be electrical, mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic with control systems being manual or computer operated. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Prepare for mechanical cutting of materials under supervision. Evidence requirements 1.1 Cutting machines and lubricants are identified and selected in accordance with worksite procedure. 1.2 Material characteristics are verified with supervisor. 1.3 Machines are inspected and checked in readiness to achieve job specifications. 1.4 Machines are set and settings verified to job specifications. 1.5 Potential hazards are identified and preventative action is taken in accordance with worksite procedure. Outcome 2 Perform mechanical cutting of materials under supervision. Evidence requirements This unit standard is expiring Cut edges conform to job specification or worksite procedure. 2.1 Materials are cut in accordance with job specifications. 2.2 Blade clearances are confirmed to achieve shearing consistent with job specifications. 2.3 Outcome 3 Verify mechanical cutting of fabrication materials using powered machinery under supervision. Evidence requirements 3.1 Cut materials are inspected and measured for compliance to job specifications. 3.2 Non-conformance to job specifications is identified and reported to supervisor.
