New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 9931 version 3 Page 2 of 4 3 The following apply to the performance of all elements of this unit standard: a All required equipment must be set up, started up, operated, and shut down in accordance with company procedures. b All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite health and safety procedures (where these exceed code) for personal, product, and worksite health and safety, and must meet the obligations required under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and subsequent and delegated legislation. c All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite environmental procedures (where these exceed code) for personal, product, and worksite environmental matters, and must meet the obligations required under the Resource Management Act 1991, and subsequent and delegated legislation. d All work practices must meet documented worksite quality management requirements. These include documentation of activities, events, and decisions. 4 This unit standard can be assessed on job. Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Select teak decking method and materials. Range materials – teak, adhesives, fastenings. Performance criteria 1.1 Selected method is matched with substrate, and with design requirements for timber thickness. Range 1.2 Teak is selected to meet job requirements. Range 1.3 substrate – fibre-reinforced composite, wooden with fibrereinforced composite sheath, metal; method – epoxy adhesive, polydisulphide adhesive, temporary fastening, permanent fastening. requirements – moisture content, dimensions, defects, profile, grain direction. Fastenings are selected to meet job requirements. Range adhesives, screws, nails, staples. Performance criteria 2.1 Teak is cut to size so that it can be fixed to the substrate in accordance with job requirements, and fair lines can be achieved to design requirements. 2.2 Teak pieces are pre-shaped in accordance with job requirements for jointing to adjacent pieces. Range 2.3 jointing – scarving, spiling. Teak is pre-treated in accordance with adhesive manufacturer’s recommendations, specifications, and instructions. Element 3 Fit and fix teak to substrates. Performance criteria 3.1 Substrate is faired to job specifications and tolerances for fair lines. 3.2 Teak is fitted and fixed in accordance with job requirements for fastening type and location of butt joints. 3.3 All glued interfaces are in contact with each other. 3.4 Pressure between teak and substrate is maintained for sufficient time to meet manufacturer’s requirements for adhesive curing. 3.5 Planks are spaced in accordance with job requirements for dimension and appearance. Element 4 Make teak planking watertight. Range by caulking and gluing. Performance criteria 4.1 Materials are selected and prepared in accordance with job requirements and manufacturer’s specifications and instructions. 4.2 Materials are applied to job requirements, and in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications and instructions. 4.3 Water tightness is established using visual methods.
