People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare the
forage harvester for harvesting; carry out field preparation;
carry out harvesting with the forage harvester; and carry out
post-operational procedures.

Prerequisite: Unit 23635, Demonstrate knowledge of anaerobic
silage processes, and hand test forage crop prior to harvesting;

Definitions

organisation has in place including but not limited to those relating to health, safety,
environment, quality, and operations.
Manufacturer’s instructions may include specifications, installation, handling, use, and
maintenance instructions and safety data sheets.

Prepare the forage harvester for harvesting.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Attachment or attachments chosen are appropriate for the crop to be harvested
and the harvesting purpose or purposes.

Equipment and machinery are checked for condition, damage, wear, and faults;
problems are identified; and corrective action is taken in accordance with
manufacturer’s instructions and company requirements.

2.1
Crop is assessed for suitability to harvest in relation to maturity, moisture
content, client requirements, and weather conditions.
2.2
Hazards in the field are identified and controlled in accordance with company
requirements.

services, overhead objects, surface obstacles, contours.
Logistical readiness is established in accordance with company requirements
and one’s level of responsibility.

may include but is not limited to – access; fuel and oil supplies and
storage; innoculant; communications with client, crew, support
services, and base; labour resources and rostering; fatigue and
stress management; means to record chargeable activities
(hectares, hours, tonnes, dry matter sampling, subcontractor
activities, truck load numbers, weighbridge).
2.4
Equipment is adjusted to meet the requirements of crop type and crop
conditions in accordance with company requirements.
2.5
Crop is assessed to determine whether mowing, windrowing, or other
preparation is required prior to harvesting in relation to crop type, uneven
growth, foreign matter, moisture content, and lodging.
2.6
Planned work programme takes account of contours, ground conditions, line of
sight to any ground obstacles, machine capability, correct crop to be harvested,
and capacity of downstream operations, and minimises empty running and
unharvested areas.

3.7
Equipment and machinery are monitored during operation for condition,
damage, wear, and faults, and are replaced, repaired and/or reported in
accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and company requirements.
3.8
Equipment is monitored for sharpness and counter-knife adjustment, and
required adjustments are made in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions
and requirements of the job.
3.9
Weather conditions and crop moisture content are monitored and harvesting is
adjusted or stopped accordingly.

Carry out post-operational procedures.

4.1
Shut-down procedures are carried out in accordance with manufacturer’s
instructions.
4.2
Equipment is cleaned and, as required, treated in accordance with
manufacturer's instructions and/or company requirements.
4.3
Lubrication is carried out in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
4.4
Any damage or faults including any missing, bent, broken, or loose parts are
identified and are repaired, replaced, or reported in accordance with
manufacturer's instructions and/or company requirements.
4.5
Equipment and machinery are stored in accordance with company
requirements.
4.6
Documentation for the operation is completed in accordance with company and
client requirements, and is stored in accordance with company requirements.
