People credited with this unit standard are able to: clarify job
instructions; select and prepare equipment and machinery for
sowing crops; carry out field preparation; sow seed for crops;
and carry out post-operational procedures.

This unit standard is relevant to all types of seed drill. Types may include - direct drill
(zero tillage), conventional drill (cultivated ground), precision drill (zero tillage and
cultivated ground); evidence of at least one is required.

Personal protective equipment, appropriate to job requirements, is to be selected and
used in accordance with company requirements and manufacturer’s instructions.

Definitions
Company requirements refer to all policies, procedures, and methodologies the
candidate’s organisation has in place including but not limited to those relating to
health, safety, environment, quality, and operations.
Job instructions are those given to the operator prior to undertaking a job. They may
include site safety instructions, contract specifications, and written memos.
Manufacturer’s instructions may include specifications, installation, handling, use, and
maintenance instructions and safety data sheets.

1.1
Job instructions are clarified in accordance with company requirements.
Outcome 2
Select and prepare equipment and machinery for sowing crops.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Tractor and drill chosen are appropriate for the crop to be sown and the
anticipated surface and soil conditions.
2.2
Equipment and machinery are checked and are fit for purpose; and, if required,
corrective action is taken in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and
company requirements.
Outcome 3
Carry out field preparation.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Work pattern is determined to produce systematic and efficient seed application
over the targeted area and takes into account potential hazards.
3.2
Ground conditions are assessed for suitability for sowing crop.
3.3
Equipment and machinery adjustments made are appropriate for the work to be
carried out.

Outcome 4
Sow seed for crops.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Seed is sown at the predetermined rate or spacing and depth with minimum
overlap and no unsown areas.
4.2
As applicable, fertiliser is applied at the predetermined rate and depth with no
overlap and no unfertilised areas.
4.3
Tractor and drill are monitored during use, and required adjustments are made
in accordance with company requirements and job requirements.
Outcome 5
Carry out post-operational procedures.
Evidence requirements
5.1
Equipment is cleaned and lubricated, and any damage or faults are repaired,
replaced or reported in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and
company requirements.
5.2
Equipment and machinery are shut down and stored in accordance with
company requirements.
5.3
Documentation for the operation is completed in accordance with company and
client requirements, and is stored in accordance with company requirements.

Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA,
before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses
of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
