National Certificate in Canvas Fabrication
Level

This qualification has been reviewed. The last date to meet the requirements is 31
December 2016.
Purpose
The National Certificate in Canvas Fabrication is designed for people who are in the
Canvas Fabrication sector of the Outdoor Fabrics industry. It is also for those wishing to
maintain standards in the Canvas Fabrication industry and to provide a means of
recognising prior learning for those already in the industry. Holders of this national
certificate are able to: work in a safe and professional manner, identify, measure, mark out
and cut and sew material to specification.
A number of unit standards within this qualification are also included in the National
Certificate in Sailmaking [Ref: 0374] the National Certificate in Manufacturing
(Leatherwork) with strands in Saddlemaking and Leather Goods Manufacture [Ref: 0471].
This reflects the national standards required by industry, and enables trainees to transfer
their achievements to those qualifications.
The certificate is now linked to an exit point for industry recognition purposes where people
will receive a NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation Certificate for credits achieved.
Details regarding industry recognition, industry registration, and entry and exit points for
the apprenticeship can be obtained from the NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation in
the first instance.
A record of achievement book will be required by industry trainees for the purposes of
recording assessment results and showing progress through the qualification. This
certificate is one criterion for registration with the NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation
as a Canvas Fabricator.
Special Notes
It is expected that most people will undertake training towards this qualification in the form
of an apprenticeship with the use of training manuals and record of achievement books. It
is recommended that in the first instance a "training plan" is developed with the assistance
of a NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation representative.
Application for recognition of prior learning should be made to the NZ Motor Industry
Training Organisation and accredited training providers. Credits are not automatic and
normally an assessment of ability is required.

Requirements for Award of Qualification
Award of NZQF National Qualifications
Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.
Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the
purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided on the New Zealand Qualifications
Authority (NZQA) website: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/standards/standards-exclusionlist/.
Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions
and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet
qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.

regarding industry recognition, industry registration and apprenticeship entry and exit
points contact MITO at the address below.
Version 2 of this qualification was updated and issued as version 2 in October 1997 to take
