The purpose of this qualification is to recognise individuals that have attained sufficient theoretical knowledge and operational skills required to safely operate as Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle (UAV) pilots
(also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles).
Graduates will have achieved the theory components of the Civil
Aviation Authority New Zealand (CAANZ) Private Pilot License. The qualification provides a standard method for recognising the knowledge and skills required of a UAV pilot, and establishes basic safety and competency standards to ensure aviation safety.
To work as a UAV pilot a graduate of this qualification will be able to :
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding through appropriate application of the Civil Aviation Authority New Zealand (CAANZ) flight principles for aeroplanes.
- Plan a mission, prepare resources to ensure airworthiness requirements are met, and safely launch, fly, and recover a UAV during the day and at night, utilising knowledge of UAV systems and operations and strategies that include digital mapping and GPS referencing.
This qualification is not in itself an entry level qualification, but it may facilitate entry to higher level qualifications in aviation management.
Graduates of this qualification may find employment as UAV pilots, flying and managing the payload on a UAV, in a wide variety of roles, such as surveying and mapping landscape (aerial imaging), checking damage, search, military operations, maritime surveillance, and fisheries protection.
