Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to analyse a
social institution, and evaluate the influence of a social
institution on people and society.

Social institutions include but are not limited to: kinship and marriage, the family,
religion, education, politics, the economy, the media.

For the purposes of assessment, each outcome of this unit standard does not
necessarily have to deal with the same social institution.

Outcome 1
Analyse a social institution.
Evidence requirements
1.1
The analysis establishes the characteristics of the social institution in terms of
the organisation and structures of the social institution.
1.2
The analysis of a social institution recognises variations of structure according
to place.
Range
1.3
The analysis establishes how the social institution is an agent of, and is
influenced by, social processes.
Range
1.4
at least two examples of variance.
at least one social process; social processes may include but are
not limited to - socialisation, stratification.
The analysis establishes how a social institution may be reproduced or changed
over time.
