To: Dr. John McArthur Vice President for Academic Affairs Thru: Mandy Husak Academic Affairs Coordinator From: Gary Buckley, Chair Curriculum Committee Date: February 8, 2011 Subject: Recommendations from Curriculum Committee The Curriculum Committee met on January 31, 2011 to consider the recommendations outlined below. Course Addition: Sociology has requested the addition of SOCI 4903 entitled Sociology Capstone. The attached documentation provides further information about this proposed course. The Curriculum Committee discussed this course and voted unanimously to recommend its approval. The program modification recommended below for sociology is based on the approval of this course. The Department of Computing and Technology has requested the addition of IAS 2113 entitled Computer Forensics. The attached documentation provides further information about this proposed course. In the spring of 2010 the Department of Computing and Technology brought forward this sort of request as a course modification. Though the Curriculum Committee recommended approval, it was declined at your level as too substantial a change in course content to be considered as a course modification. This approach of creating a new course and then modifying the program – see recommendation below – more neatly puts this process together. The Curriculum Committee visited with Dr. Johnny Carroll, chair of the Department of Computing and Technology, and voted unanimously to recommend its approval. Program Modifications: BS Sociology Provided SOCI 4903 is approved as a new course, the Department of Criminal Justice and Sociology has requested the approval of a program modification to add SOCI 4903 to the BS in Sociology (180) program. The addition would be under the Core Course area and increase the hours for a sociology degree from 36 to 39 hours. The Curriculum Committee discussed this proposal and unanimously recommends its adoption. BS Information Technology The Department of Computing and Technology would like to modify the BS in Information Technology program (414) if the requested course IAS 2113 Computer Forensics is approved. The modification would be a substitution of IAS 2113 Computer Forensics for IAS 2013 History Information Assurance/Security resulting in no change in credit hours for the program. The Curriculum Committee discussed the change and unanimously recommends its approval. BS Chemistry The Department of Physical Sciences has requested a program modification to the BS in chemistry program (340) to reflect the recent approval to offer ACS certified degrees. The requested program provides three concentrations – one leads to the possibility of ACS certification, one leads to a chemistry option without the ACS additional requirements, and one leads to a Health Profession option that is appropriate for a wide variety of preprofessional programs for health-related fields. This was the third viewing by the committee and the Curriculum Committee recommends approval of the program modification to the BS in chemistry. Other Items: Minor in Information Technology The Department of Technology has requested a minor in Information Technology. The procedures for such a request are not laid out well so an improvised form is attached. The Curriculum Committee recommended approval of Information Technology as a defined minor. CHEM 1474/CHEM1471 removal from General Education The Curriculum Committee was informed of the General Education Committee’s recommendation that CHEM 1474 and CHEM 1471 be removed from the Physical Science general education list of approved general education courses.
