UNITED NATIONS LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAMME LEARNING SERVICE, OHRM ENGLISH THROUGH READING Course Code: E6R2/1 Duration: This course is held one hour a week for 12 weeks. (Please check posted schedules for dates and time.) Description: This course is designed for students who would like to improve their overall proficiency in English. Research has shown that increased exposure to a target language can aid in the acquisition of that language. Most textbooks designed for learners of English contain only short reading excerpts. In this course, students read three complete novels, 250 –350 pages in length, as well as additional reading selections that accompany them. In addition, students see the movies that have been made from the books. The books and movies provide a lot of material for in-class discussions. Students also keep a reading and vocabulary journal based on the novels and supplementary reading materials, and are required to write more formal essays/book reports for homework. Objectives: This course will provide participants with the opportunity to: Improve their receptive vocabulary through reading and their active vocabulary through various oral and written activities designed for this purpose Improve their writing and syntax through the receptive act of reading and through the productive activities of writing short summaries and reactions to the reading material Keep a reading journal Improve their conversational skills through discussions of the books that they read in the course Expand their knowledge of American culture and history through reading the selected books.
