UNITED NATIONS LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAMME
LEARNING SERVICE, OHRM
ENGLISH THROUGH READING
Course Code: E6R2/1
Duration:
This course is held one hour a week for 12 weeks. (Please check posted schedules
for dates and time.)
Description:
This course is designed for students who would like to improve their overall
proficiency in English. Research has shown that increased exposure to a target language
can aid in the acquisition of that language. Most textbooks designed for learners of
English contain only short reading excerpts. In this course, students read three
complete novels, 250 –350 pages in length, as well as additional reading selections that
accompany them. In addition, students see the movies that have been made from the
books. The books and movies provide a lot of material for in-class discussions.
Students also keep a reading and vocabulary journal based on the novels and
supplementary reading materials, and are required to write more formal essays/book
reports for homework.
Objectives:
This course will provide participants with the opportunity to:
 Improve their receptive vocabulary through reading and their active vocabulary
through various oral and written activities designed for this purpose
 Improve their writing and syntax through the receptive act of reading and
through the productive activities of writing short summaries and reactions to
the reading material
 Keep a reading journal
 Improve their conversational skills through discussions of the books that they
read in the course
 Expand their knowledge of American culture and history through reading the
selected books.
